The government launched the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in 2011 to encourage UK energy users to change from fossil fuels to renewable energy, with £840m being made available in grants to businesses. Users of fuel oil, LPG or coal are the prime targets because those fossil fuels are the most pollutive and expensive, and they will benefit the most financially from the program. After installation the scheme will make quarterly payments direct into your bankfrom the government for the amount of heat you produced and the payments will continue for 20 years and are inflation linked.
Just by changing from fuel oil to a wood pellet boiler, 50% can be saved in fuel costs. When including payments from the RHI, fuel users can actually end up earning money for all the fuel they use. That's right - the more fuel you burn, the more money you earn and by doing so the cost of the replacement boiler can be recovered in full within 5 years.
